The fencing specialists at Fence and Decks of Ocala have years of experience installing and repairing custom wood fences for our clients. Do you have a wood fence that still has life left in it, but is in need of a cosmetic change? If so, you are probably debating between painting and staining your fence. Read below to see the pros and cons of both painting and staining your fence: Which option is recommended by most professionals? When deciding whether to paint or stain your fence, most professionals will recommend that you choose to stain your fence. Stain not only generally lasts longer but is also more weather resistant. What are the cost differences? Stain will be more costly upfront over paint. However, because you will need to repaint your fence more frequently than you will need to re-stain your fence, in the long term painting your fence will become much more costly. Therefore, if you are planning on making this decision a long-term style choice, staining would be the more cost-effective option. How much work does each option require? When starting with an unstained/unpainted fence, the amount of work staining or painting the fence would take would be relatively equal. However, one of the major negatives that comes with painting a fence is that paint is known to easily chip and peel, especially in particularly harsh weather areas. Because of the chips and peeling, when repainting your fence you will need remove all of the old paint before repainting. This process can be very labor intensive and timely. On the other hand, when you stain your fence you will not have to deal with these issues. While stain does fade over time, stain holds up longer than paint and the re-staining process is much easier than the repainting process. The only prep work needed to re-stain a fence would be a quick pressure wash to make sure the old stain is sufficiently removed before re-staining the wood. Why doesn’t everyone stain their wood fence? While staining may clearly seem like the better choice, many people opt to paint their fence because they want their fence to be a particular color. Recently, there have been many new stain colors created and produced. Therefore, it is now easier than ever to find the color option you want for your fence in a stain form. Paint can transform the entire look of the fence with a different colour. Stain is less dramatic; the grain of the wood is still visible because the colour is not as opaque. Paint will peel and crack as it wears over time. You need to scrape and sand off the old paint every time you want to repaint.Well, I have visited another site Groundworkslandscaping.co.nz having some wonderful and similar information.

Also, staining is not something you can easily do on your own unlike painting. You just buy paint from local store, have some brush then you can have your fence painted. I think this is one of the reasons why are there people who paints their fence instead.

I didn't know that painting your fence will become more costly over time than just staining. My home has a unique color to it so I want my fence to match it. Having it stained might help me avoid needing to replace quickly and just result in a couple of repairs here and there.

We don't suggest allowing expenses to control your determination. Paint is more affordable, however you'll require a greater amount of it and you'll likewise require groundwork. Stain is more costly, yet you will not need as quite a bit of it and it can last more than paint. Eventually, the two items cost about a similar when you consider the amount you need and how long they last.

When it comes to design, the sky is the limit with cedar wood fencing. It can be used to make picket fences, privacy fences, board-on-board fences, lattice fences, and many other types of fences. When you choose cedar, you also have a wide range of toppers and edging options. Because cedar is free of resins, it may be stained and painted in a wide spectrum of colors and finishes. There's something for everyone, from light-colored bleaches to dark stains. Choose a semi-transparent finish to keep the wood's natural charm.

Chain link, steel, wood and PVC all come in high strength materials. An in-ground pool requires a 48" high fence minimum in most states and when these types are checked, they all come in that height.

I totally agree when you said that painting wood fences would be opted for by many homeowners because they want to have a certain color on them. Personally, I want to get these kinds of fences around my front yard, and I want them in the color gray. It's my favorite color in the world, so I hope that I find a contractor to hire soon to get this started.

Paint sits 'on top' of the fence and therefore covers it whereas stain soaks into the wood and colours it. Paint will over time, peel and crack whereas stain will fade. Paint, can completely change the colour of the fence, where stain will be more subtle in colour change.

I appreciate what you said about calculating the work cost of replacing a fence. It seems like a lot of work to do by myself. I'll have to consider getting a contractor to put up a new chain link fence.

There are a few reasons why people might not want to stain their wood fence. For one, it can be a lot of work. You have to clean the fence, sand it down, and then apply the stain. It's a time-consuming process, and not everyone has the time or patience for it. Additionally, it can be expensive to buy the stain and other supplies needed to do the job right. Finally, some people simply prefer the look of natural wood and don't want to change it.

Reminds me of the chores my dad would give me every school holidays. Staing the fence was one of them and I hated it, it used to soak up so much paint/stain, and I was constantly trying to think of ways to make it easier.
